The Battle of Trench (Khandaq), which took place 2 years after the Battle of Uhud. The other name of this Battle of Khandaq is Ahzab, Basically, the name of the trench was given this battle due to dug around Madina upon the order of the Prophet (PBUH) of Allah in order to stop the attack of the enemy easily.
Nowadays, many companies provide ziyarat to this place (Battle of Trench or Khandaq) when Muslims get their Umrah Packages. This is a 3rd great war in Islamic history, therefore, every Muslim should visit this site during their Umrah.
The name Ahzab was given to the battle because along with the Qurayshi polytheists (the belief in or worship of more than one god), Jews, Ghatafans and many other Arab tribes and groups came together in order to attack Madina.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had ejected Sons of Nadr (1 of the Jewish tribes) from Madina. They had gone to the north and settled in different places like Damascus, Khaybar, and Wadi’l-Qura.
One of the incidents that Sons of Nadr Jews caused to happen their encouragement and leading is the Battle of Trench.
An inauspicious idea, walking all together against Madina and eliminating the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) of Allah and Muslims was put forward by those Jews. The Qurayshi Polytheists were always thinking of something like that and were always ready for such an endeavor. They were aware of the fact that they couldn’t stop the Islamic development. Almost all of the routes for their trade convoys had been closed.
After the Battle of Uhud, Islam was increasing day by day continuously and Qurayish of Makkah could not stop it.
They didn’t want to be a just watcher to this condition, which could destroy them economically. They wanted to weaken the influence of the Islamic state in Madina.
The offer to walk against Madina all together and to eliminate the Islam that was led by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in its own place was made by the leaders of Sons of Nadr Jews.
After Sons of Nadr Jews got a promise out of Qurayish polytheists to act together. They also made an agreement with the tribe of Ghatafan.
The total number of the enemy army against Islam was 10,000.
When the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was informed about the situation (Battle), he called his companions. The Prophet (PBUH) asked them, Shall we fight the enemy outside Madina or shall we stay in Madina?
Salman Farsi said: O Messenger of God when we were afraid of the attacks of cavalrymen in Persia, we dug trenches around the city and defended it.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) preferred the opinion of Salman Farsi (RA).
All Muslims worked very hard to dig trenches around the Madina and Prophet (PBUH) determined what places would be dug by whom. The Prophet (PBUH) himself dug trenches and encouraged the Muslims to finish the trenches as soon as possible.
The Muslims dug trenches all day without taking any rest. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) looked at them with the pity and mercy and prayed as follows: O God, There is no permanent life other than life in the hereafter. Show mercy on Ansar and Muhajir.
The Muslims who worked hard answered the prayer of the Prophet of God as follows: We have promised Muhammad (PBUH) to make jihad in the way of Allah as long as we live.
Islamic army consisted of 3,000 people. It was 1/3 of the number of the enemy army. There were only 36 cavalrymen. There were 2 standards in the army, 1 belonging to the Muhajirs and the other to Ansar. Zayd b.Haritha was leading the muhajirs and Saad b.Ubada was leading the Ansar. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) settled the headquarters on the foot of the Mount Sal. The enemy settled its headquarters in the north of Madina at the place of Battle of Uhud. They were surprised when they saw the trench around the city but mujahids didn’t fear when they saw the enemy army of 10,000 soldiers.
As mentioned in the Holy Quran:
When the Believers saw the Confederate forces, they said: This is what Allah and His Messenger (PBUH) had promised us, and Allah and His Messenger (PBUH) told us what was true. And it only added to their faith and their zeal in obedience.
The battle started, the enemy army could not cross the trench therefor arrows and stones rained upon both sides. The Muslim army tried to prevent forces from gaining access to the city via other points on the one viewpoint and to overpower them along the trench on the other. At one moment, a few Qurayish’s cavalrymen crossed the trench through the narrow point of the trench.
One of these men was Amr ibn’Abd al-Wud requested a warrior for one on one combat. The Muhammad (PBUH) gave Ali (RA) his sword and turban. Hazrat Ali (RA) killed the Amr ibn’Abd al-Wud. While there were some minor fights during the battle which lasted around 20 days, the allied forces were unsuccessful.
As the Makka’s polytheists had prepared for a short fight and the Muslims intercepted the food supplies. The weather became extremely cold, the enemy of Muslims faced increasing difficulty when their tents were destroyed by a heavy storm, thus the army of enemy fled from the battlefield. 6 Muslims were martyred and 8 enemy soldiers killed in this Battle.
